Posters That Work: Posterro and Persianissimo

Piotr Motyka

Life in the bustle of the city is in constant motion. A good poster can grab people’s attention through this chaos, with memorable messages that stand out from the crowd. Further, it is important for today’s messages to be gleaned by people in a short period of time. After all, who likes to spend hours on the Internet to find out what’s happening in town? Trawling through endless (lists of) search results, links, comments and ratings? If you don’t, then the new app Posterro is for you – it’s as simple and direct as a poster.

Posters + Smartphones
Posters have been around for a century, but the principles behind their invention seem to be the same as those behind the design of the best smartphones: simplicity and visual attractiveness.
With Posterro, one may discover posters featuring coming attractions – similar to a physical experience in a bus stop or underground station, where posters compete for attention with unique design and form. The difference is that if a poster catches your attention on Posterro, its information may be accessed right away, be it a concert, show or film. The name of each poster’s designer is displayed, with links to their full portfolio.
Posterro was created by two friends from Kraków, Piotr Motyka and Maciej Domagała, who couldn’t accept that after they started using a car as their main mode of transportation, they no longer had daily contact with street posters as a useful source of information.

Renaissance of gig posters
Thanks to online services such as Soundcloud and Spotify, most music is now available through the Internet; CD sales have ceased to be the main source of income for bands and artists, and have been taken over by concerts. Nevertheless, many music fans still want something material connected with their favorite music. For many, these desired artifacts take the form of posters collected from the concerts they’ve attended. In the UK, France, Belgium, Poland, Russia, the United States and many other countries, attractive and unique posters are designed for well-known artists, often using the technique of screen-printing in very limited numbers. It was because of this that Posterro began its activities from music, before film and theater posters were added to the service.

Posterro in Iran
Posterro was launched in London and Paris in June 2013. It is likely that by the end of the year, the first posters from Tehran will appear on the service. Its creators would like to introduce this with a short presentation of entertainment-related posters from Iran, to be available to Posterro users all around the world.*

Persianissimo
The first version of Posterro was launched in June 2012, dedicated to the 23rd International Poster Biennale in Warsaw. It presented almost 600 works by those qualified to participate in the competition. The next version of the application, which recently became available at the App Store and Google Store, also allows the user to look at the full portfolio of the artists taking part in the Biennale.
In May 2013, another application was launched – Persianissimo –which is the mobile version of the show presenting the best contemporary Iranian poster designers, selected by Majid Abbasi.

The story
Persianissimo is an exhibition showcasing the works of Iranian graphic designers, which was held for the first time in 2009 in Colorado State University, alongside the 16th Colorado International Invitational Poster Exhibition. Some 28 posters, each submitted by a different Iranian designer, were displayed in Fort Collins Museum of Contemporary Art, curated by Majid Abbasi.
This exhibition, the first of its kind in the United States, is now part of the permanent collection in Colorado State University. It is a show significant both for the number of its participants and the variety of their works.
Persianissimo is updated regularly—more designers are joining in and the exhibition has become more flexible with the number of pieces it features. After the show held at the Toronto Harbourfront Centre, the number of designers represented rose to thirty four, and Persianissino was honoured to feature ten pieces from some of the Iranian masters of graphic design.
This exhibition is the result of the collective efforts of those involved, and it aims to give exposure to the wide range of contemporary poster design generated in Iran.
It has been shown around the world in collaboration with different organizations such as: The Faculty of Fine Arts of Marmara University, Istanbul, Turkey; The Eastern Mediterranean University, Department of Visual Arts & Visual Communication Design, Famagusta, Cyprus; The Free University of Bozen Bolzano, Faculty of Design and Art, Italy; The Harbourfront Centre, Toronto, Canada; Villa Decius, Krakow with the support of Dydo Poster Collection, Poland; Devi Art Foundation, New Delhi with the collaboration of Amirali Ghasemi, India; and The Central House of Artists, Moscow with the support of the Golden Bee 10—Moscow Global Biennale of Graphic Design, Russia.

Persianissimo, the 9th edition
Persianissimo is an exhibition which is mobile by nature (since it moves from place to place), but it has never been so mobile as it has been from May 2013, when it became available from Google Store and AppStore. Neither has Persianissimo featured so many works before. Also, never before has Parsianissimo featured so many pieces of artwork.

Persianissimo of the future
The aim of Persianissimo and of Majid Abbasi personally is to enhance and develop Iran’s poster culture and encourage young designers to create beautiful posters. That’s why the exhibition will be developed dynamically, to reward and promote the best designers, and present their most interesting works.
Persianissmo is also a way for the unique style of Iranian graphic design to become known around the world. The Persianissimo mobile applications are synchronized with Posterro, so that all the content made available by the designers can also be accessible in the search engine of the Posterro application, and presented to a wide audience, beyond designers and art galleries.
